Farming, Food, and Fun

A Family Cooperative Kids Activity Week

What.
Most of America’s children think that their food originates in the grocery store. Most of America’s children have never picked fresh vegetables, nor tasted food within minutes of its harvest. Increasingly, fruits and vegetables consumed by Americans on the Atlantic Coast were produced and harvested in the central valley of California. The Farming, Food, and Fun activity week aims to expose children to pesticide free production of vegetables on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and involve them in the harvest, preparation and consumption of those vegetables.

Who.
We would like to have a total of five families participate. We already have a few families signed up with children ranging in age from 5 to 9 years of age.

When.
June 30 - July 4, 2008. 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM daily.
On July 4 families are invited to come back later in the day for the annual Colchester Farm Independence party and pot luck.

Generalized Daily Schedule:
9:00 - 9:30 - arrival and free play
9:30 - 10:15 - farming activity
10:15 - 10:45 - free play
10:45 - 11:45 - snack and food activity
11:45 - 12:30 - organized physical activity

Where.
Colchester Farm. Activities will be conducted in and around the main farmstead at Colchester Farm. The “Little House” will be the base of operations and serve as the drop off and pick up point.

How Much.
Each family is expected to coordinate one day of activities. Part of that responsibility includes bringing whatever supplies are needed for the entire group of children. Rob Etgen and Suzanne Kilby will be present throughout the entire week to help coordinate activities and manage children.

Details.
Each family should sign up in advance for one day of activities. First come, first served on scheduling and activity types (Cawleys claim Friday). All families will be asked to sign hold harmless liability waivers for Colchester Farm.

For more information and to sign up, please email Rob Etgen or call 410-648-5609.
