Second Saturday Series

Want to know how to prepare that strange looking vegetable you can barely pronounce? Or maybe you'd like to know how to save some of your harvest to enjoy throughout the winter? Every 2nd Saturday from March through November join us to learn hands-on about Beekeeping, Gardening, Mushroom Cultivation, Fermentation, Food Preservation (eg. canning, freezing and drying), and much more.

March 12, 2-4pm -- Seed Starting

Learn how to grow your own transplants during this hands-on class. Bring your own seeds to plant your own (soil mix and containers will be provided). You may then leave your newly seeded plants to grow in our greenhouse or take them home with you. We then plan to grow out the plants in our greenhouse and participants return in May to pick them up. This is a free event, but donations are always welcome.

April 9, 2-4pm -- Blueberry Planting Party (Rain date=April 16th)

We received a grant from the Fruit Guys Community Fund last year which included funds to start our own blueberry patch. Come help us plant them.

May 14, 2-4pm -- Transplant pick-up and swap

Come pick up the transplants you started in March and swap any extras with one another. Or, bring any extra transplants you've started and grown yourself to trade with others.

Come see how honey is extracted and give a hand removing the cappings or turning the crank of the extractor.

September 10, 2-4pm -- Mushroom Cultivation Class

This has now been rescheduled for October 15th, 1-3pm

Come learn the basics of fungi and how they grow during an interactive presentation on how to cultivate shiitake mushrooms from oak logs. In the workshop, participants will learn how to properly inoculate logs with shiitake spawn as well as how to take care of these logs so they will bear mushrooms for years to come. Nevin Dawson will lead this hands-on class.

November 12, 2-4pm -- Basics of Fermentation

Local fermenter Shane Brill will lead this hands-on class. He has experience with kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, yogurt, greek yogurt, and kefir-leban -- all of which he makes on a regular basis -- plus kimchi, pickling, and sourdough.
